How safe are the COVID vaccines

The vaccination history for COVID-19 has set new precedents – and not necessarily for the better. The CDC has stated that they are the safe and effective? Is it? The answer to that depends on your definition of safe. This installment will focus on the relative effectiveness of COVID vaccination compared to established vaccines.

About 369 million  doses1 have been administered to about 170 million people2. As of the date of this writing, about 7,218 people have died from adverse reactions3. Let’s compare:

The death rate from smallpox vaccine “is approximately one death per million persons receiving an initial dose and one death per four million among persons receiving another dose after the first dose 4.”

Adverse event reporting for the polio vaccine did not report deaths, but contained statistic of the  incidence of vaccine associated paralytic polio (VAPP)such case occurred  no more than one out of 700,000 vaccinations5.

Chickenpox or varicella vaccine has slightly less than 1 serious adverse even per 1 million doses6.

According to VAERS, there have been 5 reported deaths associated with the measles vaccine from 1990 to 20217.

“The precise rate of VAPP varies with the study and the methodology used to measure it. The rate of VAPP is higher for the first dose of OPV than for subsequent doses, ranging from one case per 700,000 to one case per 3.4 million first doses. The risk of VAPP among first dose recipients was estimated as 1 case per 2.8 million children in India compared with first dose recipient risk of 1 case per 1.4 million children in the United States.”

“In August 2019, Merck published a 22-year review of the varicella vaccine. The review included data collected from study reports submitted from March 17, 1995, through March 16, 2017, during which over 212 million doses were distributed globally. Researchers found a decrease of reported adverse events over time (around 500 per one million doses in 1995 and around 40 per one million doses in 2016) and serious adverse events comprised 0.8 reports per one million doses.”
